How are epics like The Wasteland, The Cantos, or Ulysses written? How did the great maximalist authors like McCarthy, Wallace, Delillo, Pynchon, and others build up their skills to be able to pull off a Blood Meridian, Underworld, or Gravity’s Rainbow?
Does it start with young authors wanting to be the next Thomas Pynchon, trying to write the next ambitious masterpiece? Or somewhere else?
Well, today we are going to hear first from Ernest Hemingway, who will speak at length about why so many authors who try to write epics, mythical works, and ambitious works end up with an unreadable waste of paper.
Then, I will analyze why so many modern authors take the Faustian deal of trying to be “epic” and talk about the career trajectory of Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Wallace, McCarthy, Delillo, and others, and show how they ended up writing epic works.
