Classics Club: King Lear, Oedpius Rex, & Ran

The Tyranny of Vision: Seeing, Knowing, Failing
5

For this month’s classic club, we will dive deep into vision, madness, destiny & revelation in two of the most canonical plays ever.

Our call will cover

King Lear by Shakespeare

Oedipus Rex by Sophocles

Ran by Akira Kurosawa

In this call, I don’t want us to focus on the plot or characterization of the stories for too long but rather to examine how Shakespeare, Sophocles, and Kurosawa image pattern

  • Eyes

  • Vision

  • Revelation

  • Light

  • Darkness

Throughout your reading, observe how the authors/director build on and repeat the themes/images up until the penultimate moment of each piece.

This will serve as an exercise for us to examine how the best authors in the world prime us so the climax feels even more immense.

I would still encourage you to join if you can’t make the calls because you can

  • Watch the recorded calls, which will be posted below

  • Chat with me in Substack messages about the book and have any questions answered.

We will meet on 4/26 at 10 AM PST and discuss all three works for 75 minutes.
