Something I want to start doing is to stop making everything we read in the book club so profound. Last summer, we were reading 6+ postmodern behemoths at once, and even though I had fun grinding, I got way too burned out. I can juggle many books at once if they have the right balance.
The Things They Carried is a literary war collection of connected short stories, and what O’Brien does at times is genius. Many people have never read this or read it back in high school or college, but I consider it an American classic and it will be an essential cornerstone piece of reference as we build this bookclub archive.
I would still encourage you to join if you can’t make the calls because you can
