Welcome one, and welcome all our first books in the Nabokov book club and course, where we will read almost all of Vladimir Nabokov’s books together.
Of course, we must start with the boogeyman of Nabokov’s bibliography, Lolita.
Most people know about Lolita, and have maybe seen one of the adaptations, but before we start diving into some of Nabokov’s more esoteric works, we have to cover the BIG ONE.
Lolita is obviously known for its crazy plot and characters, but the main focus of the call isn’t underage sex but rather how Lolita is one of the best voice-driven novels of all time. The novel's framing is a masterclass of Nabokov’s ability as one of the GOATS of Western literature.
I would still encourage you to join if you can’t make the call because you can
Watch the recorded calls, which will be posted below
Lurk and listen to the call while it’s live if you’re busy with your family, commuting, working, or doing whatever. I am 100% fine with you popping in, saying your thoughts, and leaving if you’re super busy!
You can maybe make it to one of our other 10+ book clubs every month
FYI, beginners and expert readers are all welcome :)
We will meet on the date below at 9 AM PST on Zoom and talk for 55 minutes (so we have a five minute break before the Pynchon book club)
May 24th - Lolita
