Welcome to the classic club! We will read and discuss a classic book, play, or poetry collection each month. Most of us were traumatized by Shakespeare during our school years, and I know countless great readers who have refused to give Shakespeare another chance. So, instead of acting out the play with your class and having to do stuffy assignments, let’s read Shakespeare in the way he is supposed to be read.
Robert Bly said that Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and other classic authors are meant to be read alone in nature or with no external pressures. These classic authors didn’t enter the canon because they were scrubs. However, academic rigidity isn’t a good mindset through which to view love, tragedy, and nature.
I’ve decided to start with Hamlet because it is the shortest (and one of the best) of Shakespeares tragedies. I’m excited to dive into this with you guys!
I would still encourage you to join/read if you can’t make the calls because you can
